I checked out a few of the popular ones – MTN, Starcomms, IPNX, Zain etc, but I wasn’t impressed. The reason was this – Start-up costs were high.

Then, I ran into an intelligent young man. He glowingly told me about his business which had an online platform. As he talked on and on, I interrupted him, asking him a simple question – Which Internet Service Provider do you use? What he told me wasn’t popular. It had not heard about their service. Ever. I had heard of all the ultra-fast service providers, but not this one. His Answer – Zoom Mobile.

He also told me that the start-up cost was worth considering – N10,000. This was the price of the Modem as well as I month full subscription-24/7. I couldn’t believe it. A couple of Days later, I was at their office in Port Harcourt to sign-up.

While I was there, I noted the following: -

• Their service was Quick
• Very short and Straight forward documentation requirements
• The cost of their services was really reasonable

I completed the required procedures and got on their network in no time. I could have walked out after about 30 minutes, totally satisfied with their service but I decided to hang around to observe some more.

I couldn’t help wondering why a business with some very good selling points such as theirs, were not in the faces of their potential customers. By this, I mean that to the best of my knowledge, Zoom Mobile was not engaged in any form of serious advertising to let Nigerians know that they have got something going on.

Before I go on, Let me tell you a little about them.

Zoom Mobile (formerly Reltel Wireless) commenced full commercial operations in Nigeria in November 2001. They have the first state-of-the-art Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) equipment operating on 1900 MHz frequency (in Naija, I guess).

There are many businesses out there who offer remarkable products and services but many people don’t know that they exist in the marketplace. I really don’t get it. For all I cared, the silence of the Company on the advertising horizon in recent times made me think the company was having serious issues.

Well so far, I have used their service for about two months and I am not complaining about their Internet Service.

I am however of the opinion that they need to get into the market and wow the huge potential market of students, young and upwardly mobile professionals who are looking for this kind of product, that is tailor-made for their wallets, while delivering an okay service.

 I was also in awe when I walked into their impressive and well-equipped training centre. I noticed the following: -

• After winning some clients over to grace the very first edition of the Advert Newsletter,
• after designing their Adverts,
• after reviewing them with our distinguished clients,

• after plugging them onto the Advert letter and reviewing the whole layout,

The design was sent to the Printer in Lagos

A couple of days later, 10,000 copies of KONNECT landed in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Holding a copy in my hands was a dream come true. To complete our value proposition, these Advert Letters needed to be placed in the hands of the potential customers of the clients. We needed to go to all the places where we could find them and ensure that they get a copy for themselves.

Clearly, the market for majority of our clients was young, upwardly mobile individuals, middle-class professionals, entrepreneurs and students. We had mapped out a couple of places where we knew we were going to find them in their large proportions.

These places were: -

• Salvation Ministries
• Winners Chapel
• The Universities in Port Harcourt (Sadly, they were on Strike)
• Happy Bite at Airforce Junction
• Silverbird Cinemas in Town
• All the major Eateries on Aba Road
• Charlie’s Place
• Some banks and Oil Companies etc.

Distributing the First Edition of KONNECT was interesting. Its colourful design and layout was so eye-catching that many people thought it was for sale. Many initially refused to collect it when it was thrust towards them.

Some of the places we had thought would be good places to display them refused to accept them. We however discovered that the best way to distribute KONNECT was by Hand – giving it directly to people. This was essentially what we started to do on the 2^nd day of distribution.

For us, distributing the KONNECT Advert Newsletter was an awareness campaign. We are trying to do something new in the Niger Delta and we are trying to create value to businesses in Port Harcourt by showcasing their businesses to their potential customers, thereby increasing their sales and of course their profitability.

The August 09 Edition has come and gone. Work is already begun on the second edition and we are moving fast.
